Forklift Battery Safety
The large industrial sized batteries used to power electric lift trucks should be charged regularly and correctly maintained. Safety measures should be followed when connecting the battery to the charger. It is essential to check fluid levels in the battery.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
Eye protection is essential for anybody working with a lift truck battery. Full protection comprises safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The right way to protect clothing and skin from leaked acid or other residue is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash station should be situated close to the charging area. The route to the station must not be obstructed and an employee who is injured must be able to go to the eyewash station from the charging place in 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The battery and charger should be at the same amperage. It must be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
When in the vicinity of a charging area and battery, open flames are prohibited. Do not allow objects like for example matches or lighters to be utilized while someone is inspecting the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is vital to keep the battery charging area properly ventilated. The recharging method can cause fumes to be released. These gases are both poisonous and explosive.
